HomeGrown Magazine. VOL.1 No.6 1980 Turn of the Decade issue.
I've grown to love this issue with its literary and artistic feel, from the cover to the frontispiece contents page with it's border hand-drawn in my cottage by a local art student, and my Decades of Dope, an historical perspective editorial, to Brian Barritt's Hotel California, sci-fi style with John Beaumont's spaced out illustrations; Anslinger's Assassin of Youth! Marijuana preview by me of Reefer Madness by Larry Sloman, the history of marijuana in America with illustration by Johnny Reno, the art director; Hail Albion on the Stonehenge Festival by the Rev. Richard Mayes (Ric the Vic); Alien to Alien by Patti Smith, beat poet and musician; The Psychedelic Pogrom by Heathcote Williams, o-level acid, a twice told tale, but “lest we forget”; and prison letters, campaign ads, Smokey Bears comix strip by Bryan Talbot, and more.
The centre-piece feature of the issue must be the preview by Don Irving of the greatest cannabis photographer in the world, the Canadian Laurence Cherniak's The Great Books of Hashish,, Volume 1: Book 1.
